Students in Berlin blocked entrances to high schools on Friday to demand more funding for education and oppose any return of compulsory military service, while expressing solidarity with large student protests in France.

Public broadcaster RBB reported that dozens of students gathered early Friday outside the Andreas-Gymnasium in the Friedrichshain district and used trash bins to obstruct access. They carried signs reading “Stop compulsory military service and education cuts,” “Education not war,” “Smaller classes,” and “Solidarity with France.”The initiative “School strike against conscription” said the action focused mainly on calls for greater spending on education and opposition to plans to reintroduce mandatory military service. Protests also took place outside the Leibniz-Gymnasium in Kreuzberg, and some students marched close to the Ellen-Key-Schule.
