Mexican airlines can expand service to US cities after Washington lifted restrictions that blocked new routes from Mexico City’s two biggest airports.

By Valentine Hilaire According to a Mexican government statement, the US ended on Friday the restrictions on carriers operating from the capital’s major international hub, the Benito Juárez airport, as well as the four-year-old Felipe Ángeles airport. The decision from the US Department of Transportation clears the way for airlines to add flights from the two facilities to destinations in the US. The Department of Transportation didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Restrictions had been in place since October 2025. That’s when Washington announced it was taking action in response to the Mexican government’s restrictions on US carriers, including cuts to slots at the Benito Juárez airport and the relocation of cargo flights to Felipe Ángeles. The US argued that those measures violated bilateral aviation agreements.

The restrictions had blocked or canceled over a dozen existing and planned routes by Mexican carriers to the US. At the time, President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the US move, insisting there was no justification for the sanctions.
