Katie Zacharia won’t be remembered as one of the “all-time greats” in the White House press room, as one of her colleagues predicted this week, but she will go down in the annals of presidential press secretary history. Her tenure of five days in the role easily beats the previous record held by Anthony Scaramucci, who spent 11 days in President Trump’s communications shop during his first term. Zacharia kicked off her time at the podium with some big news, announcing the departure of Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. ambassador to Greece, but she quickly became the news as questions swirled over her legal career.

Here’s how it all went down: Trump announced on Monday, a federal holiday, that Zacharia would be holding her first press briefing the next day. “Katie has been with me, in spirit, from the very beginning, and will do a fantastic job!” he wrote on Truth Social. Before the appointment, she was the senior communications adviser to Truth Social, after having briefly served as a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. Zacharia was seen on the South Lawn as Trump departed for a camping rally in Ohio on Monday afternoon but stayed behind at the White House.

She received her initial briefing materials that same day. Zacharia held her first press briefing before a packed room of journalists. It was a shaky opening, as she haltingly read from a script and accidentally referred to her husband, Tyler Zacharia, as “my president.”She broke the major news about Guilfoyle, which led the ensuing news cycle, but only spoke for roughly 14 minutes and took questions from three conservative-leaning outlets.

Within minutes, critics were asking if Zacharia was up for the job, but her defenders said the nerves were to be expected during her first outing in the pressure-packed press room. That afternoon, a reporter asked Trump where his new press secretary, who often touted herself as a lawyer, passed the bar exam.

He turned around to Zacharia, standing behind him outside the White House, to answer. She responded, “when I moved to China.”The newsletter Popular Information has previously raised questions about her legal career, reporting that no record was found of her passing a bar exam anywhere. The White House said Zacharia moved to China with her husband after graduating from Pepperdine University’s law school. She had referred to herself as a lawyer on TV previously, and Trump called her an attorney when he announced she would be taking the position.

Her LinkedIn account shows she worked as an associate at the Zhong Lun Law Firm in Beijing from August 2011 to June 2013 and was general counsel of Fix California from 2024-2025. Both resumé items would become the subject of much chatter in the days ahead. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that she sat for the California bar exam after graduating from law school in 2011 but didn’t pass. The Campaign for Accountability filed a complaint with the State Bar of California on Wednesday asking for an investigation into whether Zacharia’s claims of being a lawyer broke state law.

The complaint notes that if the reporting is accurate — that Zacharia has “repeatedly held herself out to the public as entitled to practice law without a license to do so” — it could be a crime under California law. The White House pushed back on the complaint, with communications director Steven Cheung calling Campaign for Accountability a “radical leftist-organization run by rabid numbskulls suffering from a severe case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.”Zacharia’s time in China also came under the spotlight. Legal experts told The Hill that while she may have worked at a law firm in China, that didn’t necessarily make her a lawyer.

Zacharia went on defense Thursday, with a pair of interviews on conservative outlets. She told Jack Posobiac on Real America’s Voice that she didn’t have time to get fully prepared ahead of the shaky Tuesday briefing.

"I never had a full briefing beforehand, and I went out and I effectuated the briefing," she said. "It was absolutely my goal to keep it short, considering he is his own best spokesperson,” she added of Trump. She said the initial briefing materials were given to her on Monday evening, but only finalized on Tuesday at 8 a.m., less than two hours before she appeared for the 9:30 a.m. briefing. She said she had been up since 3 a.m. preparing.

She told Posobiac that the results of her bar exam were “somewhat inconsequential” because she knew she’d be moving to China. “After moving to China, I didn't really think much of the bar results or consider that something that I needed to focus on,” she said. "It's unfortunate that people dub this as some kind of conspiracy or want to put me in a camp,” she said. “The truth is, I was very careful how I executed this, and I never came across as someone who was an attorney-at-law."

Zacharia faced a surprisingly hostile Sean Hannity on Fox News on Thursday evening. “You called it a conspiracy theory as it relates to being a lawyer,” Hannity said, referencing the interview Zacharia did with Posobiac, pointing out what he said were 15 social media posts “where you identify yourself as an attorney.”“I think they were retweets, and I corrected the record,” she responded. Zacharia appeared on Fox News again Friday morning and was again met with tough questions.

"Fox & Friends" host Lawrence Jones asked if she should have told the White House about her legal qualifications during the hiring process. “Those questions weren't asked,” she said. “I'm being hired as White House press secretary, not White House counsel. The conversations and the reason I was — the reason that I was hired was to represent the president in the press.”

She said the “legacy media wants to put the focus and attention on me because they wanted to be distracted from the major wins that President Trump is making for America.”If the interviews were meant to win over Trump, it didn’t work. Later Friday, Trump told reporters before departing the White House that he told Zacharia to “reconsider” the role.

“I said, ‘Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider,'” Trump told reporters Friday, referring to a conversation he said he had with Zacharia earlier. “I said, ‘You think about it, but I would reconsider,'” he continued. Minutes later came the first reports that she was out of the job. A White House official said she was “transitioning out” of the role. Zacharia hasn’t made any public comments, and did not respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

A source familiar told The Hill that Zacharia was to join Vice President Vance and second lady Usha Vance for dinner at their residence Friday evening.
