Latin America's exports are on track to grow 20% this year, driven by rising demand for gold, silver and copper, according to new estimates from the UN's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The gains have improved the region's overall trade balance and raised questions about a new commodity boom.

Latin America's exports are on pace to grow 20% this year, according to new estimates from the UN's Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The commission said rising global demand for gold, silver and copper has been the main driver behind the gain, lifting prices for the region's biggest mineral exports.

The export surge has meaningfully improved the region's overall trade balance, ECLAC said, reversing several years of comparatively sluggish growth for exporters across Latin America. Mining-heavy economies in the region are best placed to benefit from the stronger metals demand, the commission noted.

The figures have revived talk of a new commodity boom for Latin America, though economists cautioned that gains concentrated in a handful of metals can prove uneven once global prices eventually ease.
