High Healthcare Burden Hampers Chinese Household Consumption, IMF Report Finds High healthcare expenses are driving Chinese citizens to prioritize precautionary savings over consumer spending, according to a recent International Monetary Fund publication.

In rural China, healthcare absorbs 8.7% of disposable income, trailing only the United States at 9.9% among 20 major economies, while urban China ranks third at 5.4%.

IMF economists Yizhi Xu and Fan Zhang noted that China's social spending remains low relative to international peers, with rural migrant workers saving roughly 14% of income compared to 6% for urban hukou holders.

The authors argue that expanding government healthcare and social safety nets, particularly in rural regions, would lower elevated household savings and stimulate broader domestic consumption.
