By Mirette Magdy and Jorgelina do Rosario The head of the IMF said that Iraq has approached the Washington-based lender for a new program, a request she said the fund intends to support.

“We will get to Iraq both money and policy support,” Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said at the conclusion of the International Monetary Fund’s annual meetings in Bangkok Saturday. “The authorities requested a program, and we will support Iraq very firmly.”Iraq is among several countries struggling with the impact of the war on Iran, particularly lost revenue from oil exports impacted by the near-closure of the Strait or Hormuz.

Georgieva didn’t provide details on the type of program or how much financing the IMF will provide. Informal talks with Iraq about possible IMF, World Bank assistance kicked off around April spring meetings.

Georgieva also reiterated that the fund has made “significant progress” on a potential new program for Lebanon.

“The most important task for us is to recognize that divergence in the MENA region and concentrate our efforts on the countries that are more vulnerable,” she said, using shorthand for Middle East and North Africa. “In that sense, a program for Iraq, a program for Lebanon would go a long way.”She added that Gulf Cooperation Council countries have managed to firmly implement reforms, which has allowed them to build up revenues to “cushion the impact of the shock that has affected them.
