Senator Jon Ossoff staged the largest rally of his reelection campaign near Atlanta, repeatedly painting President Donald Trump as a “crook” whose policies have made life unaffordable for Americans.
Ossoff, considered a potential top Democratic contender in the 2028 presidential contest, hit back at the president a day after Trump, at a rally in northwestern Georgia, repeated false claims that the 2020 election in the state was “rigged” and that Ossoff had never been legitimately elected.
Standing before a large “Georgia Votes Early” sign, Ossoff used the president’s remarks to urge Georgians to defend their rights.
“How foolish of them to come to the cradle of the civil rights movement to spread those lies and seize those ballots,” Ossoff told a crowd of about 1,500 people.
Trump’s repeated claims about Georgia have stoked fears in the state that he might attempt to have the federal government interfere in the counting of ballots in next month’s midterm. The GOP-controlled State Election Board in Georgia asked the federal government last month to intervene in the election, but the Justice Department hasn’t taken action.
Trump won Georgia in 2016 but lost in 2020, leading the president to promote unfounded theories of widespread election fraud. Trump and key allies were indicted in the state, accused of carrying out election interference. Those charges were eventually dropped.
Trump won the state narrowly in 2024 but a Civiqs poll tracking Trump’s popularity across two terms has him at a record low in Georgia, with just 33% approval to 59% disapproval.
Ossoff, who has consistently led his Republican opponent Representative Mike Collins in polls, blasted the president and his allies for growing richer while Americans struggle to pay for rising fuel, health care and other bills.
“The Mar-a-Lago mafia really has taken American corruption to spectacular new heights,” Ossoff said to applause. “This corruption is why nothing works for ordinary people.”Joining Ossoff on the rally stage was former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is running against Republican Rick Jackson to become the next Georgia governor. She would be the first Black woman governor in the US.
Bottoms faces a tougher race with polls showing Jackson enjoys a slight lead in that race. The victor of the governor’s race and a contest for secretary of state could have a major effect on management of the 2028 presidential election, when Georgia is expected to once again be a swing state.
Ossoff pledged to serve out a full six-year term if he wins in November, a commitment that — if he holds to it — would rule out a potential presidential bid.
Ossoff’s consistent lead in his Senate race came as a surprise given that he is the only Democratic incumbent senator up for reelection in a state that Trump won two years ago. The senator leads Collins in the RealClearPolling Average by 9 percentage points, 52% to 43%.
High prices — fuel prices in particular — are at the top of voters’ minds. Ossoff has sought to tie Collins to Trump’s tariffs and the war with Iran, which Collins has supported during his time in the House.
“Trump won Georgia two years ago because people thought they were in a financial crisis,” Beuleh Hannon, 72, said. “Now they know they are in a financial crisis.”Hannon said she still works in medical device sales because she cannot afford to retire. But her industry, Beulah said, has been hit by the Trump administration’s spending cuts.
Ossoff has highlighted the ties of Collins’ campaign volunteers to white supremacist groups. On Saturday, he called his opponent a “scandal pinata,” drawing laughter from the crowd.
Collins has portrayed Ossoff as an out-of-touch rich kid with a trust fund who has attracted campaign donations from out-of-state billionaires.
“Ossoff can’t defend his own record, so he lies and hides behind his hatred of Trump like a coward,” his campaign said in a statement Saturday.
