Fitch Ratings has raised Nigeria's sovereign credit outlook from stable to positive, citing President Bola Tinubu's fiscal and currency reform program.

Fitch Ratings has raised Nigeria's sovereign credit outlook from stable to positive, pointing to the fiscal and monetary reform program President Bola Tinubu's government has pursued through 2026. The agency held the country's "B" credit rating steady but said the revised outlook signals room for an upgrade.

Since taking office, Tinubu's administration has removed longstanding fuel subsidies, unified the naira's exchange rate and tightened public spending. Those steps pushed inflation higher in the short term, but Fitch analysts pointed to rebuilding foreign reserves and a narrowing budget deficit as concrete evidence that macroeconomic stability is taking hold.

Analysts say the improved outlook could lower Nigeria's borrowing costs on international markets and sharpen foreign investor interest in the country. Fitch said it will watch closely whether the reform program continues through its next scheduled review.
