Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated on Monday that she would return to Bangladesh in December despite the risk of arrest, torture or death.“I will go back to Bangladesh in December,” she said in response to a question from India Today at an event hosted by the Center for US-Bangladesh Relations in Washington, DC. Hasina joined the event virtually.“I am not afraid. I know they can kill me, arrest me and torture me,” she said.
Hasina said she had faced arrest and torture before but wanted to return. “It’s my responsibility to go,” she said. The Awami League chief has been living in India since her ouster following a student-led uprising on August 5, 2024. She had outlined her December return plan in interviews in July and reaffirmed it on the second anniversary of her removal from office.HAD EARLIER ANNOUNCED DECEMBER RETURNDuring an audio address to international media in Delhi marking the second anniversary of her ouster, Hasina said concern for Bangladesh’s people outweighed fears about her safety.“Whatever fate awaits me, I will return to my people. I cannot stay away while my beloved countrymen are suffering,” she said.
She acknowledged that she could be detained or imprisoned, but said, “fear cannot decide my duty to the people”. She promised to announce the exact date of her return at an appropriate time. Hasina also said her return and the Awami League’s participation in the democratic process were “not about power” but about restoring Bangladesh’s development, secularism and stability.'I'M PREPARED FOR THE RISKS'Hasina had outlined similar plans in July in separate interviews with international news agencies Reuters and AFP.
She told Reuters that she and senior Awami League colleagues intended to return around December and surrender before the courts. “They may arrest me on my return, they may even kill me,” she said.“Still, I have to go. My party leaders and workers are being subjected to tremendous repression. If death comes, I want it to come on my own soil, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed,” she added.
In emailed responses to AFP, Hasina said she understood the risks but wanted to return because “my people are calling me." She also said Indian authorities had not discussed extradition with her and that returning was her own decision.DEATH SENTENCE AND EXTRADITION REQUESTBangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death in absentia in November 2025 after convicting her of crimes against humanity over the crackdown on the 2024 student-led protests.
Hasina has denied the charges and described the proceedings as politically motivated. Dhaka has repeatedly sought her extradition from India, first under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim administration and later under the government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. New Delhi has said the request is being examined through judicial and internal legal processes.- Ends
