(NewsNation) — A PAC aligned with the Republican Party is reportedly looking to quell support for a Democratic candidate in the Ohio Senate race by promoting a socialist candidate.
With Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown and Republican Sen. Jon Husted in a tight battle, "Enough Promises Ohio" has spent over $2.7 million combined to boost candidate Greg Levy, a Party for Socialism and Liberation candidate, and oppose Brown, Politico reported. As of the filing Tuesday, the PAC has spent over $1.2 million on "media placement/media production" and "printing/postage" on Levy's campaign, the report states. According to Decision Desk HQ, Brown is narrowly favored to win the race, 53% to 47%, over Husted. However, the projected vote share is split equally at 50%.
An October poll by Bowling Green State University had Levy at 5% of the vote share, but ostensibly the hope is to pull votes away from Brown. Politico reports that Enough Promises Ohio used a printing company linked to a GOP political firm, Whistlestop Strategies.
In an X post on Oct. 11, Levy said mailers "falsely impersonating our campaign" were being sent out to Ohio voters. "The Greg Levy for Senate Campaign has no ties to the entities circulating the mailer and we condemn this attempted deception of voters.
"There is a well-established record of both Republican and Democratic Party operatives using their financial resources to try and trick voters. This is a highly undemocratic practice and does a disservice to voters in Ohio and throughout the country," Levy said. Requests for comment to Brown and Husted's campaigns were not returned prior to publication.
