Less than two weeks until Election Day, top House Democrats are demanding answers from the Trump administration about unverified claims of noncitizen voting and allegations of voter fraud across the country.
In two letters shared first with MS NOW, Democrats pressed the administration for answers about its efforts to investigate alleged noncitizen voting and urged major social media companies to crack down on election misinformation.
In the first letter, Reps. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., and Joe Morelle, D-N.Y. — the top Democrats on the Judiciary and Administration committees, respectively — asked Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to brief lawmakers on the department’s methodology behind its unverified claim that Nevada registered nearly 16,000 noncitizens its lawsuit demanding California to investigate 20,000 ballots of “likely” noncitizens, and DHS’ claims that there is illegal voting taking place in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
“These disturbing episodes raise significant concerns that DHS is desperately (and unsuccessfully) attempting to bully states into disenfranchising eligible voters in the final weeks before the 2026 elections,” the lawmakers wrote.

Judge rules against DHS officials knocking on doors to target alleged noncitizen voters October 22, 2026 In July, Mullin sent letters to the state secretaries of California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania warning them of noncitizens registered in their respective states, citing a “preliminary review” of records.
In the case of Nevada, DHS claimed more than 15,903 noncitizens were registered to vote. But the department only identified 185 potential noncitizens, MS NOW previously reported That number later fell to zero, according to Greg D. Ott a deputy attorney general in Nevada.
“The stakes for our democracy in this offensive could not be higher,” Raskin and Morelle wrote in their letter. “Under the Constitution, the states are primarily responsible for election administration, and Congress has the final say on the time, place, and manner of federal elections.”The Justice Department and DHS have also filed a complaint against California over the state’s voter rolls, alleging that 20,000 registered voters are “likely” noncitizens. The departments asked the state to take the unprecedented step of setting aside ballots cast by tens of thousands of voters.
“This is a blatant, and laughable, attempt to intimidate local elections workers ahead of the November election as even DHS admits that the individuals they have identified are only ‘likely’ noncitizen voters,” Raskin and Morelle wrote.
With the midterm elections approaching and Democrats bullish about their chances of winning control of the House, the lawmakers accused the administration of bullying states into restricting access to the ballot.
“Instead of protecting the security of American elections, DHS and President Trump are engaging in increasingly brazen bully tactics to force states to illegally remove eligible voters hand-picked by the Administration from their voter rolls,” the lawmakers wrote.
Democrats are also taking their fight to major media companies, urging them to enforce their own rules against misinformation and address the risks posed by artificial intelligence.
In letters sent to executives at Google, Meta, TikTok and X, Raskin requested staff briefings on how the companies are combating election misinformation ahead of the midterm elections.
“Every election cycle, bad faith actors, both foreign and domestic, use your platform to advance false and misleading claims about voting and election integrity,” wrote Raskin to the executives.
The Judiciary chairman asked for clarification from the tech executives on what steps their platforms were taking to enforce their policies against voting misinformation, and whether anyone in the Trump administration had approached their companies about their policies against spreading election misinformation.
“Make no mistake: our election system is essentially secure, and Americans should be confident that their timely vote, whether by mail or otherwise, will be counted. Yet, despite the basic security of this system, mail-in ballots are a frequent subject of disinformation online,” Raskin wrote.
