Australia's treasurer tells POLITICO’s Canberra Playbook Podcast the country is hostage to global events and rising bond yields.
CANBERRA — Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers has confirmed rising bond yields will blow a multibillion-dollar hole in the budget, as the cost of servicing government debt spikes around the world.
Speaking exclusively to POLITICO’s Canberra Playbook Podcast, asked to describe the impact of higher borrowing rates on Australia’s bottom line, he said, “definitely billions. How many billions remains to be seen.”“It’s one of the big pressures on the budget, in particular refinancing existing debt,” he said.
To address that, Chalmers has taken his sales pitch global, to convince lenders to come to Australia. This month the treasurer has been to Tokyo, Hong Kong and Bangkok, presenting Australia as a financial safe harbor to investors in charge of trillions of dollars.
